Grand Knight's Report

Worthy Brother Knights,

Memorial Day Flag Raising was held on May 31, 2010 at our KC grounds. Thanks to St Vincent De Paul Assembly 2040 for their excellent turn-out. Presentation was made by the Grand Knight, me. The Detachment was led by Color Corps Commander Earl Mills, FN Oscar Gutierrez, and taps was played by Max Martinez. A continental breakfast was served after the Flag Raising Ceremony, thanks to brother Mike Kaiser and Brother Juan Soto for preparing the hall and serving the breakfast.

The Flag Retirement Ceremony was conducted at 10:00 am by the Grand Knight. At first we were going to ask permission from the Director at San Fernando No 3 cemetery, to bury the ashes. However I found out form Brother Richard Gonzales that Bishop Tom has blessed the hall and the surrounding area, therefore the ashes were buried in front of the flag pole which is holy ground. Brothers Mike Kaiser, Otis Rankin, Richard Gonzales, Reuben Rendon and I helped with the flag burning, which is the proper way to retire the flag. Thanks to Brother and SK Juan Soto for starting the hole and special thanks to Brother, immediate PGP, and SK Reuben Rendon and Lady Sally Rendon for donating a beautiful rose bush that was planted on top of where the ashes from the flags were buried.

By this time we’re well into summer, schools out, vacations are starting so remember to drive safely and buckle up.

On June 10, the council elected its officers for fraternal year 2010-2011. I thank you for electing me to another term. Names are listed in column at right. Most of the officers were reelected to a second term. Two of the officers are serving their first term. Brother Fidencio Gomez was elected to the Inside Guard position and Brother Jimmie Elizondo was elected to the position of Three Year Trustee. Congratulations! Let’s work for another great year.

Don’t’ forget the Chicken Breast Fajita Plate Fundraiser on July 11, 2010. Proceeds will be used to support our council charities. Brother Gene Espree has made an excellent suggestion, that is, to have every brother Knight buy at least one ticket, even if they don’t like chicken they can donate it to someone. The effect would be that the council would benefit from the charity of our Brother Knights. We have about 250 members. That would go a long way to help our council and the worthy charities that we support.

Brother Bill Ruppel has made a similar request and that is because our bingo player attendance has been very low these last few sessions that we’ve had. Brother Bill and other Brother Knights made a helpful suggestion and that is to have family members attend and play bingo while brother knights sell bingo cards, call bingo, work the floor; and run the snack bar. Charity begins at home and the KC Hall is our second home, so bring your loved one to play bingo on Friday night.

The 4th of July picnic will be held at the Council Hall on Sunday, July 4 from 4pm to 7pm. This is a family event. Bring your children and grandchildren for a great celebration. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. Refreshment will be available at half price.

time to conduct the audit. The Financial Secretary and Treasurer need to make their records available to the trustees and be present during the audit to answer questions.

Keep in Prayer all our Brothers and family members who are sick, hospitalized, home bound, especially, Felix Aguilar, Pat Belko, Bill Boettner, Nell Dawson, Pat DeFrees, Oscar Garcia, Esther Garza, Rudy Guerrero, Oscar Gutierrez, , Jack Hunter, Robert Moore, and Natalie Wilson.

As we celebrate our nation’s independence, let us pray for all the members of our Armed Forces, especially our brother knights, Dr Daniel Bates, Omar Hernandez, Rosenbert A Hernandez, Christopher Kiser and William Ramos.

Chaplain’s Message

The summer is here! Summer is very exciting. Each day we should be committed to what I have called “prayer-action” during this summer’s vacation and beyond.

I would like to encourage each of you to do the same. Often, church attendance goes down during summertime as families take the time for much needed vacations. Amidst the hustle and bustle, excitement and privileges of summer, let us remember to take the time to pray. There are so many things to consider in prayer– from personal concerns to national and international challenges. There is always something to pray about! So, while we are vacating, let’s remember to never take a vacation from prayer– maybe we need to take vacations to pray. In Luke 6:12, amidst Jesus’ hectic schedule of teaching, preaching, healing and working miracles, he takes a vacation to pray. From the business executives, to the homeless; from the White house to the outhouse; from Wall Street to my street; from the rich to the poor; from coast to coast; we need to take time to prayer. Let us pour out our hearts to the Lord today.

There is no better time than now. Summer is exciting for many of us. But prayer is the essential for all of us. May the words of the following poem inspire you today!

Take Time

TAKE TIME to think; it is the source of power.

TAKE TIME to read; it is the foundation of wisdom.

TAKE TIME to play; it is the secret of staying young.

TAKE TIME to be quiet; it is the moment to seek God.

TAKE TIME to be aware; it is the opportunity to help others.

TAKE TIME to love and be loved; it is God’s greatest gift.

TAKE TIME to laugh; it is the music of the soul.

TAKE TIME to be friendly; it is the road to happiness.

TAKE TIME to dream; it is what the future is made of.

TAKE TIME to pray; it is the greatest power on earth

Financial Secretary

As we begin the new fraternal year, I would like to challenge all brother knights who are “physically” able to consider becoming involved with council activities and programs. As of June 22, 2010, our membership stands at 250. Age groups for our membership are shown below. 90 and over 4 80- 89 26 70-79 72 60-69 62 Under 60 86

Age does not mean you can not be involved. Currently there are 4 active workers in the 80-89 group and another 4 who support fundraiser activities. Approximately 26 in the 70 to 79 group and 12 in the 60 69 group are actively involved in council and parish activities. The numbers drop for the under 60 group. It is understandable. It is difficult for those of working age to work on a regular job then go to a volunteer job, and to attend late meetings. However, there are opportunities to work on week ends on church ministries such as greeters/ushers. We, as brother knights, should be ready help our priests.

For as many years as I can remember, knights have served on various church ministries but we can do more. Currently the Liturgy Coordinator, and the Usher/greeter Coordinator are knights. Several Lay Eucharist ministers are also members. More usher participation is needed. The council needs a committee to visit the sick and offer help. The council also needs more dedicated help on game nights.

Volunteer to help. Our mission is to serve others. If you know of any brother knight who needs help, please call the Grand Knight at 210-673-0522 or me at 210-674-3346.

Hope to see more of you at the Officer Installation meeting on July 8. It is an open meeting, bring your spouse.

Retirement income you can’t outlive

People are living longer today than in any other time in history. While this is certainly a good problem to have, it creates a new worry for those facing retirement: what if I outlive my savings? How does a retirement income that you cannot outlive sound to you?

This sounds pretty good to most members and this can be true if you open a Knights of Columbus annuity, which is designed to provide guaranteed long-term security. As a knight, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into this annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. Couple that guarantee with the fact that no one has ever lost money put in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember, absolute safety of principal) and you will have peace of mind.

Don’t forget contributing money an annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And our annuities offer a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. These benefits are similar to those of an IRA or similar product, but ours is backed by the strength and financial stability of the Knights of Columbus.

At your convenience, I will happily to meet with you to explain in detail the benefits of selecting our annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance and long term care insurance plans.

As you consider options as you proceed toward retirement, think about one thing guaranteed to help you and open a Knights of Columbus annuity. For appointment, please call Roger Pedroza, Field Agent, at 830-665-4323 or 210-215-7955.
