Grand Knight's Report

Worthy Brother Knights,

We’ve had an exciting beginning for the new calendar year and mid-fraternal year this past month. The Winter Parking Lot Yard Sale was postponed for an indefinite period due to inclement weather conditions.

I am humbly asking for your participation and support for council activities, officer positions, committee positions and attendance at our General membership meeting as well as our on-going fundraiser events. We’ve gone for almost four years without a Recorder, if you“re good at taking notes or are willing to learn please contact me or any officer. We need a Family of the Month Director, to prepare award certificates monthly, a small article for the monthly newsletter, and chair the annual Family and Knight of the Year Award Banquet. We’re in dire need of a clean-up crew to give our cooks a well-deserved break after they have prepared the meal. Remember no job is too menial if we do it with love for Christ.

Brother Juan Garza attended the mid-term Archdiocesan meeting on January 16th at St Pius X Church (Council 4298). The meeting was opened by Diocesan Deputy Sam Szalwinski with a Rosary dedicated to the unborn and the earthquake victims in Haiti. State Advocate Douglas Oldmixon provided a status report on the various state programs with emphasis on charity, recruitment, retention, youth and insurance goals. San Antonio has reached 80.4% of its goal. Wheelchair project, Culture of Life Fund and football sweepstakes program were also discussed. Bottom line -we can do better.

Communion Breakfast January 17, 2010, was a great success there were about 50 participants who enjoyed a great breakfast. The menu consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, paddies, potatoes and sausage, sausage and salsa, biscuits, butter, coffee, orange drink, and milk. Brother Rosenbert Hernandez, along with a great crew, Mike Kaiser, Abel Nañez, Juan Soto, Dieudonné “DJ“ Jaosidy , Fidencio Gomez, and Rick Carrasco, made up the kitchen crew. The cleanup crew consisted of our Worthy Brothers Mike Kaiser and DJ. Thank you Brothers for all your hard work and dedication, from all our council brothers who make the Communion Breakfast a great success.

The Family and Knight of the Year Award Banquet held on January 24th was well attended. Congratulations to the winners: Knight of the Year Amado Gonzalez; Family of the Year Omar and Stacie Hernandez.

The Sweetheart Dance Fundraiser will be on Sunday, February 14, 2010, the tickets will be $25.00 per couple and $15.00 per person. Performing on Valentine“s Day will the live band of Gary Henson and the River City Wranglers; who play classic and contemporary country and rock music. We are asking for your support and participation on this worthwhile and fun event. If you can donate a bottle of spirits or any item for a door prize for the raffle call Otis Rankin at 210-623-4681 or Fernando Herrera at 210-673-0522.

Events coming up are the semi-annual audit by the trustees, financial secretary, and treasurer. The audit is due at Supreme before February 15, 2010.

Brothers, you have until March 1, 2010, to submit an application of our annual scholarships. You, your children and grandchildren are eligible. Contact DGK Juan Soto at 673-2132 or 210-772-2315 for applications. The State Council also offers a $1000 grant based on need to each Diocese. Eligibility is the same.

Brother Richard Gonzales made a great suggestion and our brothers Rosenbert Hernandez, Mike Kaiser, and Juan Soto are going to make it a reality. Council 5262 is going to have a monthly Bar-B-Q at the beginning of each month beginning in March. Plates will be $6.00 each and consist of a main entry plus two sides with condiments. Date for the first Bar-B-Q to be determined. We are asking for your support and participation for the worthy fundraiser.

Keep our sick, infirmed, and distraught brothers in prayer, especially Freemon Sattelmaier who is in rehab at Brighton Gardens, Sherman Miller recovering at home from a stroke, Nancy Smallwood, whose arm is in a cast, and Julio Hernandez who was just released from the hospital.. Also for all our brothers who are serving in the military, especially our young brothers, Brother Rosenbert Hernandez and Brother William Ramos, and Brother Reuben Rendon Jr.

Chaplain’s Message

My dear brother Knights, as you know Lent is around the corner and we have to be well prepared for this penitential season. There are few ideas that could help you live a little bit more close to the Lord and to prepare to celebrate the mysteries of his passion, death and resurrection.

  1. Take 30 minutes to pray, ask the Holy Spirit“s guidance, look over this activities list for the Season of Lent, and make a few practical Lenten resolutions. Be careful. If you try to do too much, you may not succeed in anything. If you need to get up early or stay up late to get the 30 minutes of quiet, do it. Turn off your phone and computer. Don’t put it off and don’t allow interruptions.
  2. During the Season of Lent, Get up earlier than anyone else in your house and spend your first 15 minutes of the day thanking God for the gift of life and offering your day to Him.
  3. Get to daily Mass.
  4. If you can’t do Mass daily, go to Mass on Fridays in addition to Sunday and thank Him for laying his life down for you. Maybe you can go another time or two as well.
  5. Spend at least 30 minutes in Eucharistic adoration at least one time during the week.
  6. Recover the Catholic tradition of making frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament throughout the week, even if it is only for 5 minutes.
  7. Get to confession at least once during the Season of Lent after making a good examination of conscience. May our blessed Mother guide us to her Son and help us to follow His voice

Retirement income you can’t outlive

People are living longer today than in any other time in history. While this is certainly a good problem to have, it creates a new worry for those facing retirement: what if I outlive my savings? How does a retirement income that you cannot outlive sound to you?

This sounds pretty good to most members and this can be true if you open a Knights of Columbus annuity, which is designed to provide guaranteed long-term security. As a knight, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into this annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. Couple that guarantee with the fact that no one has ever lost money put in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember, absolute safety of principal) and you will have peace of mind.

Don’t forget contributing money an annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And our annuities offer a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. These benefits are similar to those of an IRA or similar product, but ours is backed by the strength and financial stability of the Knights of Columbus.

At your convenience, I will happily to meet with you to explain in detail the benefits of selecting our annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance and long term care insurance plans.

As you consider options as you proceed toward retirement, think about one thing guaranteed to help you and open a Knights of Columbus annuity. For appointment, please call Roger Pedroza, Field Agent, at 830-665-4323 or 210-215-7955.
